Dotty is a crochet basket formed by squares, the famous granny squares!
The square creates a basic module that can be composed to form many different projects. I am making baskets to keep yarn and notions.
The instructions to crochet Dotty – and also Mini-Dotty! – in DMC Natura Just Cotton yarn are free on my online shop from 19 July 2021 (click here, add the pattern to the cart and go to check-out, no payment details will be requested).
Dotty’s basic granny square starts from a circle and turns into a square! The square modules are worked separately, so we can use any spare minute to make a square. At the end the squares are joined with the crochet hook. For this project the needle is used only to weave in the ends. I have a feeling that this detail will make some of you happy…
The best known and most crocheted “grannies” are those completely made in double crochet and chain stitches. The squares to make Dotty use the same basic crochet stitches to create a more contemporary design and a denser texture, we need to keep our crochet hooks in our basket!
For my baskets I used DMC Natura Just Cotton yarn in 5 colors. A base color and 4 colors for the colored dots: Nacar N35, Jade N20, Giroflée N85, Aguamarina N25, Lobelia N82. In all, 45 tiles are needed for a basket with a square base of approx 25 cm:
21 Cream squares
6 Pink + Cream squares
6 Sunflower + Cream squares
6 Sage + Cream squares
6 Aqua + Cream squares
Those colored circles suggested the name Dotty. The circle + square pattern makes it super easy to play with colors and it’s a great way to use up all those small leftovers from previous projects for a super colorful basket. My basket has different colored dots on each side, what will your Dotty look like?
The free pattern is only available on Airali design online shop (from July 19, 2021)! Download your copy and have fun crocheting!
